10 Fun Facts About Your Skin
As someone who works with skin each and every day, I love to learn about it. I wanted to share these 10 little fun facts about skin with you...I apologize to those of you who aren't as enamored with skin as I am!
- Your skin is made up of 3 layers.
- Your skin is considered the largest organ in the human body. Without it we'd all be unrecognizable blobs!
- Your skin has three major layers - epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis (also called the subcutaneous tissue). Your epidermis is waterproof!
- Your skin protects your inside organs while keeping infections out and prevents you from getting sick.
- Your skin loses about 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells from the surface almost every minute, even though you do not see it happening. This is why exfoliating is so important to keep that healthy glow!
- Your skin sheds a layer of these dead cells every 24 hours and renews itself about every 28 days. Unfortunately, this process slows as you age. If you use a product which contains Glycolic Acid, such as Serious Serum, it can speed up your exfoliation rate. This will help keep your skin looking youthful.
- Your skin swells when it absorbs water. Best to put your moisturizer on after getting out of the water to hold all that moisture in!
- Your skin contains a protein called keratin which is also found in hair and nails.
- Your skin is the thinnest on the eyelid.
- Goosebumps are actually little pimples that help retain a layer of warm air over our body. What also helps, a lap cat! :)
